Dave Ojala shot a much-improved 5-under-par 67 Friday for a 138 total and two-shot lead after the second round of the Senior Series Golf Tournament at the Greenbrier Country Club.
Bob Reith, Gary Schroeder and Dick Smith are tied for second at 140 going into today's final round. Jim Stefanich, Bobby Stroble, Bob Rawlins and Dwight Nevil are three off the pace.
Ojala had six birdies and only one bogey during his Friday round.
``I hit it pretty good and kept it in play,'' the 50-year-old said. ``I missed some birdies but I made the most of my opportunities for the most part.''
Ojala, a resident of Kingwood, Tex., a suburb of Houston, didn't hit the ball well on Thursday, but he felt his mental toughness prevented an opening-day 71 from being a 75.
``To me, it's a course that demands a lot of placement shots,'' Ojala said. ``It's not a power course at all. It makes you hit the ball where you're supposed to hit it. If you don't, you will be penalized.''
Bob Reith feels good to be in contention after shooting a 1-over 73.
``I drove it good but I missed some iron shots,'' Reith said. ``I didn't hit it very close to the hole; I didn't give myself many chances.''
Stroble, the Senior Series' money leader and winner of last week's tournament in Louisville, Ky., is still in pursuit.
``(You) always gotta watch that Stroble,'' Reith said. ``He's always pretty tough.''
David Oakley, who was tied with Reith for the lead, shot a 77 and is tied for 15th place (144). by CNB
