On Oct. 7, I had the privilege of working at the Dare County Artrageous Festival, which was one of the best experiences of my life.
It was a pleasure to work with such caring and dedicated people as Tisha Valentine, Carrie Sanders and the countless men and women of this great county who willingly gave many days of their time to make this event possible. The care and planning were evident.
Furthermore, the children with whom we dealt were patient, polite, and caring with one another throughout the day. My mother, who assisted me at our table, and I agreed we had never worked with a nicer group of young people. There was not one cross word the entire day. As a retired teacher, I cannot tell you how amazing it was to see this.
Having just arrived in Nags Head from many years in Maryland, my husband and I had a lot of explaining to do telling friends there why we would willingly give up the shopping malls and museums to come to the Outer Banks. The reason was brought home to me on Saturday. While my husband had to return to Maryland to deal with a break-in at our home there, I was fortunate to be surrounded by the many giving and caring people of Dare County. How nice to know that there is still a place in this country of ours where the people are genuine and where community involvement and family values are still alive and well.

Nags Head Tax deduction is unfair
Retirees take note: Present regulations when submitting a North Carolina state income tax form allows for a special allowance if you are a retiree.
If you retired from a state governmental agency, you are allowed a special deduction of $4,000. However, if you retired from a private company, the special deduction is $2,000. This is an inequity which is not justified under any circumstances.
I urge all retirees from the private sector to write their representatives in the state legislature to correct this inequity.

Colington Harbour Fund-raiser a success
Through the excellent support and contributions of businesses and individuals throughout the Albemarle region, the Museum of the Albemarle Inc. was able to raise $9,000 through its annual Moth Boat Regatta fund-raiser. These proceeds will be placed in the museum's building fund and used to build a new 50,000-square-foot museum facility on the downtown waterfront of Elizabeth City. We are truly appreciative of the region's support toward this endeavor.
Through this annual event, the Museum of the Albemarle also continues its mission to preserve the history of the Albemarle region by bringing back the Moth Boat, a part of Pasquotank County's history. This year, 25 Moth Boats participated in the event and through the excellent publicity received, we hope to increase this number next year.
The Museum of the Albemarle's mission is to collect, preserve and interpret the history of 10 counties of the Albemarle: Camden, Chowan, Currituck, Dare, Gates, Hyde, Pasquotank, Perquimans, Tyrrell and Washington.
Once again, thank you for your contribution and your continued support of the Museum of the Albemarle Inc.
