SPEAKER TO SHOW BEAUTY OF BUTTERFLIES WITH SLIDES

THE BEAUTY OF butterflies will be presented at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Virginia Beach Central Library, 4100 Virginia Beach Blvd. Frank Elia, manager of the world-famous Cecil B. Day Butterfly Center at Callaway Gardens in Pine Mountain, Ga., will present a slide show and lecture. He will describe the Day Butterfly Center, its surrounding butterfly gardens and butterfly breeding facilities. The meeting is free and open to the public. Call (804) 423-1682 or 499-0333. WATCH FOR GOOD WASPS

Wood-boring wasps and beetles in Virginia now have a natural enemy. The USDA Agricultural Research Service has identified a new family of wasps known as Aulacidae. These good wasps fly most in late spring and summer, but peak flight periods may vary. A new publication gives a key for identifying them and information on each species' hosts and areas where they live. For further information, call David R. Smith, Systematic Entomology Laboratory, (202) 382-1783. SCATTER BULBS NATURALLY

Naturalizing bulbs is a term you hear often but may not fully understand, reports the American Association of Nurserymen. It means to plant bulbs in a way that looks as though they weren't planted but simply occurred naturally. This technique creates beautiful results and should yield additional flowers each year. Just hold the bulbs in one hand and scatter them across your flower beds. Plant each bulb where it falls. Water deeply and mulch afterward. Usual planting depth is two-and-a-half times the width of the bulb, which means 6 to 8 inches deep. ILLUSTRATION: Color photo
