The Chesapeake Civic Chorus has new officers, a new season of concerts and events and new gift from Ford.
During its first board meeting of the season, held Sept. 20 at the River Crest Community Center, the chorus board elected Lil Oman as president, Jo Anne Carver as vice president, Elnora Hayslett as recording secretary and Walter Broadnax as treasurer.
Along with the newly elected slate of officers, the board also reviewed its summer activities for those in attendance.
Recent chorus events included a July 16 special concert performed at the Beth Shalom Temple in Norfolk and a Sept. 20 end-of-the-summer bash held for chorus and board members, officers and their family at the waterfront home of Iris T. Hoffler II.
The big news of the evening, said publicity officer Pearl Edwards, came when Larry Frey, a representative of the Ford Motor Co., presented the chorus with a $1,000 general operating grant.
``We are all extremely grateful to the Ford Motor Company for this gift,'' Edwards said. ``It will help us with our performing and operating expenses including buying sheet music and helping maintain and bolster our public address system.''
Edwards said the chorus is scheduled to perform its two major concerts on Feb. 14 (Winter Concert) and May 19 (Spring Concert). Exact times and venues will be announced at a later date, she added.
In the meantime, the chorus plans to hold a fund raising garage sale on Nov. 3 and 4 at the Oak Grove Business Center, 130 Great Bridge Blvd. The sale will include books, toys, furniture, games, clothes and a variety of other items.
Edwards said proceeds from the sale will be used to benefit the chorus' operating budget.
On Nov. 7 the chorus will perform a special program for the residents of the Brighton Gardens Assisted Living facility in Norfolk and then on Nov. 19 it will hold one of its biggest fund-raising events of the season, the annual Silver Tea.
This year's tea will take place from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Chesapeake Central Library and will feature a performance by the chorus and performances by recipients of the Chesapeake Fine Arts Commission scholarships.
A donation admission to the Silver Tea will cost $10 per person.
In addition, the chorus will also be offering the 1996 New Entertainment coupon books at a cost of $35 per book. Each book contains literally hundreds of money saving coupons to area restaurants, movie theaters, plays, concerts, sports events, cultural events, musical performances, special leisure services and a host of other things.
A portion of the proceeds from the coupon book sale will also benefit the chorus' general operating fund.
