Northeasterly winds provided good spot fishing for pier anglers along the northern beaches Tuesday.
Plenty of spot were landed on Kitty Hawk Pier by anglers using bloodworms, and some nice big sea mullet were taken on shrimp.
Fishermen on Avalon Pier caught spot two at a time, scattered sea mullet and a few small bluefish throughout the day.
Good numbers of spot, some sea mullet and small black drum were landed from Nags Head Pier. Some speckled trout, weighing 1 to 2 pounds each, were taken on artificial lures close to the beach early in the morning.
Fishermen on Jennette's Pier caught some bluefish and trout early in the day. A black drum weighing 8 1/4 pounds was taken by Steve Dixon of Blythwood, S.C., during the afternoon.
A handful of sea mullet, bluefish and small black drum were landed on Outer Banks Pier Tuesday.
South of Oregon Inlet, Rodanthe Pier reported a few bluefish and small bottom fish taken. A few sea mullet were caught by anglers on Avon Pier. Some sea mullet, small black drum and an occasional pompano were landed on Frisco Pier.
Surf fishermen along the northern beaches caught a few small bottom fish and tailor bluefish. Dirty water along the beach kept trout action to a minimum.
A few puppy drum and tailor blues were beached along the north side of Oregon Inlet. A few small bottom fish were landed on the south side, along with scattered gray trout.
Sea mullet, small bluefish, baby black drum and some 22- to 27-inch puppy drum were taken along the beach from Rodanthe to Buxton.
Several 20- to 30-pound drum were landed at Cape Point Monday night. Small bottom fish and a few puppy drum were taken Tuesday.
Small spot, croaker, mullet and flounder were caught by surfcasters from Frisco to Hatteras Inlet. Some speckled trout were taken around the inlet, even though the grass was bad.
Fair catches of pigfish and small sea bass were reported by headboats operating around Oregon Inlet.
Gulf Stream fishing was slow off Oregon Inlet on Tuesday. Dolphin, scattered tuna and a few wahoo were taken. King mackerel fishing was good around the 70 degree tower.
Hatteras offshore fishermen also reported relatively slow fishing. Scattered dolphin, a few wahoo and some king mackerel appeared in catches. A blue marlin was released by the Release. Two sailfish also were released by Walt Spruill's Hatteras Fever.
Light onshore winds should produce some good gray trout fishing for anglers using live bait from the catwalk on the south end of the Bonner Bridge at Oregon Inlet during the night.
The water temperature at the Army Corps of Engineers Pier in Duck was 68 degrees Tuesday. by CNB
