MAN CHARGED IN ASSAULTS MAKES BOND

A Buxton man accused of assaulting his wife and another man was released on bond Tuesday after he appeared in Dare County Superior Court.

Sheriff's officials say Michael D. Quidley, 49, who owns a restaurant on Hatteras Island, attacked John Rice, an island resident, on Oct. 9, and also forced his wife to drive her car with the steering mechanism disabled.

Chief Deputy Rodney Midgett declined to speculate on a motive.

Quidley was arrested Saturday on Hatteras Island.

The charges stem from two incidents, one at Quidley's home on Oct. 9.

``Early that morning,'' Midgett said, ``Mr. Quidley allegedly tried to break Mr. Rice's neck with his hands. He dragged Rice out of his residence, drove him around a bit, then took him to the medical center. Rice was temporarily paralyzed and sustained chest injuries and a fractured collar bone.'' He was flown by helicopter to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital and was released the next day.

That afternoon, Midgett said, Quidley refused to let his wife leave their home.

``Restricting someone's freedom is a second-degree kidnapping offense,'' Midgett said.

``He later allegedly disabled the steering components in her car and ordered her to drive. Luckily, she was able to get the car off the road before an accident occurred.'' Tampering with a car, then ordering someone to drive it, constitutes an assault with a deadly weapon attempting to inflict serious injury, Midgett said.

In the assault on Rice, Quidley is charged with assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury with intent to kill, and with first-degree kidnapping.

In the assault on Candice Quidley, Quidley was charged with second-degree kidnapping, assault with a deadly weapon attempting to inflict serious injury, and assault on a female.

Assault on a female is a misdemeanor offense. The other four charges are felonies.
