Our community's strength does lie in its people.
You should see what 110 volunteer workers can do with three retired site supervisors, 14 churches, two restaurants and more than 30 local businesses: Build a dream house for a low-income family of three. This is the great formula of Habitat for Humanity.
Portsapeake Faith Builders is a coalition of 14 churches in Portsmouth and Chesapeake building a 1,100-square-foot house on Prentis Avenue.
The three site supervisors spend all day, without pay, six days a week, working and directing the other volunteers. Thousands of hours have been logged in September and October by volunteers learning and doing everything from digging and framing to electrical and mechanical to plumbing and roofing.
Churches and restaurants provide meals to all these willing workers. Churches also provide the moral support for the family.
We are grateful to these volunteers and local businesses that have contributed their time, money and effort to make this house a home.
