ERNEST L. MATTHEWS

Ernest Lawrence Matthews, 85, of the 2200 block of Courtney Ave., died Oct. 16, 1995.

He was a stevedore for the Norfolk Naval Supply, where he worked for 29 years. He had been retired from there for 25 years. Mr. Matthews was a native of New Bern, N.C., and a member of Shiloh Baptist Church, where he was on the Men's Usher Board, the Hodges Bible Class, and the Men's Choir. He became a member of Bank Street Baptist Church as a result of relocating to Braywood Manor for ten years.

He is survived by his wife, Alma Beatrice Matthews; four daughters, Ethel Louise Payton of Norfolk, Evelyn T. Wright of Warm Springs, Va., Ernestine P. Matthews of Clifton Forge, Va., Eunice L. Lewis of Chesapeake; seven sons, Ernest L. Matthews Jr., Joseph M. Matthews, Robert A. Matthews, Charles A. Matthews, Edward L. Matthews, James O. Matthews, and Jackie Bernard Matthews, all of Norfolk; sister, Louise Matthews; brother, Herman Matthews; and 34 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Louise and Moses Matthews.

A memorial service will at 11 a.m. today in Bank Street Memorial Baptist Church. His remains were donated to science. In lieu of flowers, donations to the American Cancer Society and Lee's Friends would be appreciated. Hale Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
