JAMES S. ROBB DIES AT 86; VIRGINIA SENATOR

James S. Robb, father of Sen. Charles S. Robb, has died at 86.

The elder Robb died Tuesday after a period of declining health, a statement form the Virginia Democrat's office said. James Robb had Parkinson's disease.

``As fate would have it, last week my parents celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary,'' Robb said in a telephone interview.

James Robb was in pain, and was recently moved to a nursing home, Sen. Robb said. Hume is in Fauquier County in Northern Virginia.

James Robb spent 40 years in the aviation industry, and retired from American Airlines in 1972. He was never actively involved in his son's political career, Sen. Robb said.

Robb, a former Virginia governor, was elected to his first term in the Senate in 1988. He won re-election last year in a nationally prominent race against Iran-Contra figure Oliver North.

Funeral services will be private. The elder Robb is survived by his wife and four children.
