This is National School Bus Safety Week, and the Dare County Schools has taken one step to make transporting kids safer.
Cellular phones have been placed on all 54 school buses and garage service vehicles, at a cost of $8,000 annually. Thanks to an arrangement between the county and United States Cellular, the phones are being provided for $14.95 per month, which includes 30 minutes of service. There was no charge for the phones themselves, and there were no activation charges, county officials said.
Tommie Gray, director of the county's office of Management Information Systems, said there was a reason for the phones.
``My involvement was directed by the Board of Commissioners,'' Gray said. ``They felt this was one more way we could help ensure the safety of our children and our drivers.''
Dare County buses travel an estimated 420,000 miles per year, and provide transportation for about 2,100 students. by CNB
