CALM WINDS, SEAS PERK UP SPECKLED-TROUT CATCH

Light winds and clear water along the beach provided speckled-trout action for surf fishermen Wednesday on the Outer Banks.

Speckled trout weighing between 2 and 4 pounds were landed during the morning in sloughs north of Kitty Hawk Pier and north of Nags Head Pier.

In the Oregon Inlet area, gray trout were taken Tuesday evening from the catwalk on the Bonner Bridge and from the revetment. Some bluefish, small bottom fish and a few puppy drum were beached on the north side of Oregon Inlet Wednesday.

Good numbers of sea mullet, black drum, tailor blues and an occasional puppy drum were landed in the surf from Rodanthe to Buxton.

Small and medium drum were taken Tuesday night at Cape Point. Puppy drum and bottom fish were landed Wednesday.

Sea mullet, bluefish and puppy drum were caught along the beach from Frisco to Hatteras Inlet.

Pier fishing was fair along the northern beaches Wednesday.

Kitty Hawk Pier reported only a few bluefish and sea mullet. Anglers on Avalon Pier caught plenty of three-quarter to 1-pound bluefish on jiggers and bucktails during the morning, but afternoon action was slow.

Nags Head Pier reported slow fishing, with a few bottom fish and bluefish landed. Fishermen on Jennette's Pier caught a few bluefish and nice flounder during the morning and some speckled trout during the afternoon.

A few keeper blues, spot and black drum were landed on Outer Banks Pier.

South of Oregon Inlet, a few sea mullet, toadfish, bluefish and small black drum were taken on Rodanthe Pier. Some keeper gray trout were taken from the end of the pier.

Avon pier reported fair catches of sea mullet, along with a few bluefish and spot.

Lots of 10- to 12-inch sea mullet were landed throughout the day from Frisco Pier. Some small black drum and toadfish were also taken.

Inshore trolling around Oregon Inlet was good Wednesday morning, with tailor blues plentiful. The best action was east of the Bonner Bridge.

King mackerel catches were outstanding off Oregon Inlet. Most of the fish, weighing between 5 and 15 pounds, were taken on Drone Spoons or strip baits pulled deep. The best action was about 17 miles southeast of Oregon Inlet.

Scattered tuna and fairly good numbers of dolphin were landed by Gulf Stream charters fishing off Oregon Inlet.

Hatteras offshore fishermen reported good catches of 30 to 50-pound yellowfin tuna and fair numbers of wahoo Wednesday. Most of the action was only a short distance offshore, in about 25 fathoms of water.

Speckled-trout fishing should be good along the beach today, providing the inshore water remains clear.

The water temperature at the Army Corps of Engineers Pier in Duck was 69 degrees Wednesday. by CNB
