GTE Virginia plans to begin laying off telephone workers this week, but will not say how many. The company also hopes to cut jobs through early retirement and voluntary options as it takes part in a national downsizing effort mandated by its parent company. GTE spokesman John Wallace said jobs could become available in nontelephone operations for those telephone workers laid off in Mechanicsville. GTE Telephone Operations said it will eliminate 4,700 jobs across the country by the end of the year, and another 5,000 jobs by early 1997. The company employs 1,100 people in its Virginia telephone operations and serves about 550,000 access lines. (AP) by CNB
