Notes on a frayed white cuff. . . .
The Portsmouth Sports Club already has started preparations for its annual Jamboree, probably to be held in February. This will be the club's 50th and president Bill Kline wants it to be a Jamboree that will be long remembered.
Jimmy Williams, the program chairman, is in the process of securing a nationally prominent speaker.
``We're looking at several dates,'' said Williams. ``As you know, coaches are in the process of doing recruiting at that time of year and we'll have to work it out for the speaker's convenience.
``And let's hope that the weather cooperates.''
The weather? Isn't the Jamboree indoors?
Williams laughingly recalled that last year's Jamboree headliner, Duke football coach Fred Goldsmith, nearly wasn't able to fly here due to weather conditions.
``It was so bad that I told Coach Goldsmith I wouldn't come if I was in his place. I told him we could pinch hit with a couple of the award winners if necessary. But he came anyway.''
Former Sports Club president Donald Hundley is contacting past Sports Club presidents to see if most of them can attend the 1996 Jamboree. He also is asking each to provide some highlights from their year as club president to be published in the Jamboree program.
Eddie Webb, the new executive director of the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame, addressed the Sports Club Monday and enlightened them on future plans for the VSHF.
The Southeastern District football teams perennially register the best overall defensive records in the area.
But the offenses of the eight schools are taking the spotlight this year.
Of the top 10 offensive teams in the area, the Southeastern has five - No. 2 Indian River, No. 3 Western Branch, No. 6 Deep Creek, No. 7 Churchland and No. 9 Great Bridge.
Churchland averages only 39 yards per game in passing from its wishbone, yet the Truckers have a 282.9 yards overall offensive average.
Individual district leaders include Deep Creek's Deon Dyer in rushing and scoring, Indian River's James Boyd in passing and Western Branch's Darren Walton in receiving. The kick scoring leader is Joe Verdi of Deep Creek.
Only a handful of area coaches have more than 75 victories to their credit.
Indian River's Bob Parker is approaching this milestone. He has 69.
Parker posted 42 victories in stints at Cradock and Churchland. He has won 27 at Indian River.
The area's biggest winner is First Colonial's Frank Webster. The one-time Cradock High School athlete has won 218 games in his 29 years as a head coach. Norcom's Joe Langston stands second with 143.
The 100-game winners include Norfolk State coach Darnell Moore, who won 106 games at Wilson.
Bill Strickland, Churchland's athletic director, won 76 games when he was the Truckers' football coach. by CNB
