SLOW DAY. ANGLERS CAUGHT MORE Z'S THAN FISH

Pier fishing along the northern beaches was slow Thursday.

A few speckled trout and bluefish were landed on Kitty Hawk Pier.

Some bluefish and a few 2- to 3-pound speckled trout were taken on jiggers during the morning on Avalon Pier, but afternoon fishing was slow.

Nags Head Pier reported only a handful of spot and tailor blues landed.

A few puppy drum, speckled trout and bluefish were caught by anglers on Jennette's Pier. The largest puppy drum weighed 6 1/2 pounds and was taken by Don Craddock of Churchill, Tenn.

Fishermen on Outer Banks Pier landed a few bluefish, sea mullet, small black drum and one keeper puppy drum.

South of Oregon Inlet, Rodanthe Pier reported some spot, sea mullet and bluefish taken.

After a slow morning, fishermen on Avon Pier caught fair numbers of mullet and spot during the afternoon.

Sea mullet catches on Frisco Pier were good. Quite a few puppy drum, weighing as much as 7 pounds, were landed during the early afternoon.

Surfcasters beached some tailor bluefish, a few sea mullet and some small puppy drum from deeper sloughs along the northern beaches Thursday.

Fair numbers of speckled trout were taken on artificial baits north of Kitty Hawk Pier during the morning.

A few sea mullet, bluefish, small flounder and trout were landed around Oregon Inlet.

Scattered sea mullet, puppy drum and bluefish were taken along the beach from Rodanthe to Buxton.

Surf fishermen at Cape Point landed puppy drum Wednesday evening. Puppy drum, nice flounder and speckled trout were taken Thursday.

Anglers fishing in the Hatteras Inlet area caught some puppy drum, bluefish and sea mullet.

Inshore trolling around Oregon Inlet was excellent, with plenty of bluefish landed inside the inlet.

Headboats fishing west of the Bonner Bridge at Oregon Inlet caught fair numbers of pigfish and a few sea bass.

Some big flounder were taken by private boats drift fishing in channels west of the Oregon Inlet bridge.

King mackerel fishing was good in the second slough a few miles off Oregon Inlet Thursday. Most charters caught their limits of 5- to 15-pound king mackerel.

Gulf Stream charters landed fair numbers of tuna and dolphin, but none of the boats were able to report catching their limits.

The Hatteras fleet reported good catches of 30- to 50-pound yellowfin tuna. A few wahoo also were landed. Two sailfish were released by the Release and one sailfish was released by the Nancy K.

Cooler temperatures and choppy seas forecast for the weekend should produce good puppy drum fishing in the surf along the Dare coast.

The water temperature at the Army Corps of Engineers Pier in Duck was 68.5 degrees Thursday. by CNB
