A tractor-trailer, trying to avoid hitting a car, jack-knifed Thursday night on Interstate 264 and spilled about 150 gallons of diesel fuel, police said.
The accident occurred in the eastbound lanes just before the Interstate 64 interchange. State police spokeswoman Tammy Van Dame said the truck apparently was traveling too close to a 1969 Dodge. The truck driver then braked too quickly and jackknifed.
The Dodge struck the truck while trying to avoid it and was pushed into the right-hand lane, where it was hit by a 1991 Corvette. The truck driver, of Georgia, was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital with serious, and possibly life-threatening injuries. Police did not release his name, and charges are pending against him.
The driver of the Dodge also was taken to Sentara Norfolk General with minor injuries.
Workers, including Norfolk Fire and Rescue personnel, cleaned the spill, Van Dame said.
