COX FIELD HOCKEY STAVES OFF BAYSIDE THE FALCONS NOTCH THEIR 40TH STRAIGHT WIN AS MILLER SETS STATE SINGLE-SEASON SCORING RECORD.

Heading into Thursday's Beach District showdown with Bayside, the Cox field hockey team needed a challenge.

It got it, rose to it, and came away with a 5-1 victory that was much closer until the six-time defending Group AAA Falcons exploded for three goals in the final 10 minutes of play.

Kim Miller - who broke her state single-season scoring record with three goals - led the charge with help from Catherine McCallum's two goals.

With about 16 minutes left to play and down 2-0 on goals by Miller and McCallum, Bayside (11-1 overall, 7-1 Beach) got back into the game when forward Jen Moricle sliced a ball past Falcons goalkeeper Kim Iman during a scuffle for a loose ball in front of the Cox goal.

It was the first time Iman had been scored on all season.

``That goal really lit a fire under me,'' said Miller, who now has 51 goals this season. ``We felt like we owed it to Kim to put it away.''

And that's just what Miller and company did.

With about 10 minutes left, McCallum sent a blistering crossing pass in front of the Bayside goal. Miller's first attempt was kicked out by Jen Walter, but Miller easily put in the rebound for her second goal and a 3-1 lead.

She did the same about 2 1/2 minutes later. Then with 1:40 left, McCallum scored her second goal to round out the scoring.

The victory was the Falcons' 40th in a row and gave Cox (13-0, 8-0) a 103-1 scoring edge on its opponents this season. Miller's output gave her 148 for her career.

The Falcons will be featured on an edition of ESPN's Scholastic Sports America Monday, Oct. 30, at 3:30 p.m. The show will be rebroadcast on Nov. 2 at 5:30 a.m. on ESPN and 2:30 p.m. on ESPN2. ILLUSTRATION: Photo
