BOOKER T. STARTS FAST, PASSES TRUCKERS

Booker T. Washington lived up to its No. 6 area ranking Friday night, posting a 21-10 victory over No .9 Churchland.

Coach Larry Stepney said his team was determined not to fall to the Truckers for a third straight time.

``The first time we lost to them, it was 21-20,'' Stepney said. ``They scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to win it. Last year, they jumped on us early and got away from us. We tried to fight back, but it was like being in quicksand.

``I told them if we jumped on them early, we would win.''

The Bookers (6-1) did just that, attacking quickly and efficiently in grabbing a 15-0 halftime lead.

Conversely, Churchland had trouble getting its offense into motion. The Truckers (4-3) started their lone touchdown drive with 19 seconds remaining in the third quarter. They scored 9:02 later on 13-yard pass from David Drake to Jamin Elliott.

Stepney praised both his offensive and defensive units. ``They earned their nickname tonight,'' he said. ``The Fighting Bookers.''

The Truckers had a final chance to close the gap after they held Booker T. Washington on fourth-and-7 with 42 seconds remaining. On third-and-10, quarterback Drake was looking deep. So was Booker T. Washington's Chester Jones, who intercepted the pass at the 34 and returned it to the 6. With two seconds remaining, Dominic Perry took the snap and handed off to Minter, who went 6 yards for the final score.

Stepney was not concerned when Churchland took over the balllate in the game.

``We're a good defensive team,'' he said. ``I didn't think they would do it.

``They chipped us up, misdirections, flea-flickers, but I knew these guys wouldn't go 70 yards in 42 seconds.''

Minter was virtually unstoppable, rolling up 123 yards rushing and scoring on runs of 25, 10 and 6 yards. Perry was solid at quarterback, passing for 112 yards.

Booker T. Washington also picked up a safety when a snap by Elliott went high and rolled into the end zone.
