PICK GREEN TOMATOES AND PEPPERS FOR USE LATER

PICK MATURE GREEN or ripe tomatoes and peppers before a killing frost. The use of a synthetic-fiber row cover such as Reemay may help speed up the ripening of tomatoes during cool weather as well as provide some frost protection. Store the vegetables in a cool, dark room. Place tomatoes in a warmer room when you want them to ripen. It's been proven that wrapping green tomatoes in old newspapers is unnecessary and provides no benefits.

Sweet peppers can be washed, cut in sections, seeds removed and frozen in freezer bags for use all winter in cooking. Mature hot peppers can be strung and hung or dried and placed in a closed container. An attic is an ideal place. Making small slits in hot peppers encourages them to dry. ROUNDUP BERMUDA GRASS

Research shows that this is one of the most effective times to use Roundup to eradicate Bermuda grass. But time is short. Roundup, Kleenup and other herbicides containing glyphosate, must be used when a plant is growing. By Nov. 1, most growing in this area has stopped. Using Roundup after that date will not be very effective, if at all. ILLUSTRATION: Color photo
