NEWPORT NEWS SHOOTINGS KILL 2; POLICE CLOSE THIRD SLAYING CASE

Detectives on Saturday began two homicide investigations and closed a third by arresting a man on a slaying charge for a homicide that happened last week, police said.

An unusually busy Friday night/ early Saturday morning began when a 21-year-old man was driven by a friend to Riverside Regional Medical Center just before midnight. The man, Calvin R. Davis of the 500 block of Youngs Mill Lane, was pronounced dead on arrival from a gunshot wound, police said.

Police believe an earlier fight or argument in the 500 block of Bellwood Road led to the shooting.

About three hours later, detectives were dispatched to a Jefferson Avenue bar where a shootout in the parking lot claimed the life of another 21-year-old man.

Police said Michael Mayfield, whose address wasn't available, died shortly after he was shot in the parking lot of the Calabash Lounge in the 11000 block of Jefferson Avenue. A man identified as Tilton L. Melvin, 23, also was wounded in the shootout, but not seriously, police said.

Police said the bar has been the scene of past trouble. Later Saturday, police announced they would increase patrols near the bar.

Capping the frenetic night, detectives arrested 18-year-old Sinclair D. Eley around 5 a.m. Saturday and charged him with the Wednesday slaying of David E. Long, 20.

Police said Eley, of the 700 block of Adams Drive, apparently tried to rob Long in or near his home. Long also lived on Adams Drive.

Police do not have anyone in custody for the two homicides they began investigating Saturday. Detectives ask anyone with information to call 245-0755.
