Robert Eustace Umbarger, 77, of the 1300 block of Laurel Crescent, died Oct. 21, 1995, in a local hospital.
Mr. Umbarger was born in Norfolk. He retired as an inspector from the Norfolk Naval Shipyard after 35 years and also retired from Berkley Machine Works after 10 years. He was a member of Royster Memorial Presbyterian Church, where he was a former deacon and elder and was a member of the Pace Fellowship Class. He was a member of Doric Masonic Lodge (NU)44 AF & AM; past high priest of Ionic Royal Arch Chapter (NU)46; Metropolitan Music Club; and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was an Army veteran of World War II and a recipient of the Purple Heart.
Survivors include his wife, Catharine Shane Umbarger; two sons, Richard L. Umbarger of Norfolk, Robert E. Umbarger Jr. and daughter-in-law, Sharon Kelly Umbarger of Columbia, S.C.; and a grandson, R. Shane Umbarger of Columbia, S.C.
A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Forest Lawn Cemetery by Dr. John R. Monroe. The family will be at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. today. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Royster Memorial Presbyterian Church, 6900 Newport Ave., Norfolk, Va. 23505, or to a favorite charity.
