CAN'T WIN 'EM ALL, BROPHY SAYS AFTER LOSS

Reprinted from Sunday's late editions.

The Hampton Roads Admirals' perfect start reached an imperfect end Saturday night in the Roanoke Civic Center.

Roanoke's defense came up big on both ends of the ice in a 4-3 victory as defenseman Jon Larson scored two power-play goals and the Express finally limited an opponent's offensive opportunities.

``We knew we weren't going to win them all,'' Admirals coach John Brophy said after the setback, the team's first in four games.

Roanoke had been raked for a league-high 22 goals in its first four outings and had been ripped 8-2 in Richmond the night before.

``We talked about that before the game,'' Express coach Frank Anzalone said. ``I know it's only game 5, but I tell you, we we weren't nearly as bad as the final score (on Friday).''

Roanoke outshot the Admirals 35-28 and led 4-1 entering the third period, with Serge Aubin's first-period goal their only score.

Trevor Halverson made it 4-2 with 16:33 left with his fifth goal of the season, and Aaron Downey notched his first goal of the campaign with four seconds to go after the Admirals pulled goalie Mark Bernard for a sixth attacker.

Bernard stopped 31 of 35 shots on net. by CNB
