SPECKLED TROUT TURNS OUT TO BE STAR OF A GOOD DAY FOR PIER FISHERMEN

Pier fishing was fairly good along the northern beaches Tuesday.

Speckled trout fishing was steady on Kitty Hawk Pier most of the day. Double bucktail rigs were the best producers. Tailor bluefish and a few keeper puppy drum also were taken.

Speckled trout and tailor bluefish were landed sporadically throughout the day on Avalon Pier.

Nags Head Pier also reported speckled trout and bluefish action. The trout were landed well inshore, close to the beach, and the blues were taken from the end of the pier.

Fishing was slow on Jennette's Pier, with only a few flounder landed.

Anglers on Outer Banks Pier caught good numbers of bluefish and speckled trout during the morning, but fishing slowed later in the day.

On Hatteras Island, Rodanthe Pier reported a few bluefish, puppy drum, spot and sea mullet.

Anglers on Avon Pier caught some nice sea mullet and a few croaker.

Small black drum, small flounder, bluefish and scattered sea mullet were landed on Frisco Pier.

Surf fishing from Corolla to Oregon Inlet was fair, with a few bottom fish and tailor bluefish landed.

Some puppy drum and bluefish were landed from the surf on the north side of Oregon Inlet. Scattered trout and a few small bottom fish were taken from the south side of the inlet, and also from the catwalk on the Bonner Bridge.

A few puppy drum, croaker, flounder and small blues were taken along the beach from Rodanthe to Buxton.

Some drum were beached Monday night at Cape Point. Scattered puppy drum and bottom fish were landed during the day Tuesday.

A few sea mullet, small bluefish, flounder and 4- to 6-pound puppy drum were landed in the surf from Frisco to Hatteras Inlet.

The headboat Crystal Dawn reported excellent croaker fishing outside Oregon Inlet Tuesday Morning. Some small gray trout also were taken.

Good catches of small king mackerel were landed by charter boats fishing a few miles off Oregon Inlet.

Gulf Stream charters farther offshore landed plenty of tuna. The yellowfins, weighing between 10 and 60 pounds, were scattered along the edge from east of Oregon Inlet to the 40950 Loran line. Scattered dolphin also were reported.

Off Hatteras, blue water fishermen landed scattered wahoo, dolphin and tuna.

Drum fishing should improve with the arrival of the next wind shift.

The water temperature at the Army Corps of Engineers Pier in Duck was 69.5 degrees Tuesday. by CNB
