BAILEY S. ASHBY

Bailey Sizer Ashby, 73, a Surry County farmer since 1946, died Oct. 24, 1995, in the Medical College of Virginia, Richmond.

He was an active member of Waverly Baptist Church and a former deacon and Sunday school teacher of the church. He served for 12 years on the Surry County School Board from 1976 to 1988. He was past president and member of the board of directors of the Virginia Peanut Growers Association. He was past president and active member of the Waverly Ruritan Club. He was a member of the board of directors of Prescription Fertilizer Co., Ivor, and was an active member of the Virginia Farm Bureau. He was the son of the late Edward Bassett Sr. and Wilma Sizer Ashby.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret Boothe Ashby; a son and daughter-in-law, B. Stuart and Stephanie S. Ashby of Mechanicsville; daughter and son-in-law, Carol A. and Rainer M. Schlichtherle of Midlothian; four grandchildren, Benjamin S. Ashby, Elizabeth J. Ashby, Lauren A. Schlichtherle and Hannah C. Schlichtherle; three brothers, Frederick B. Ashby of Waverly, Edward B. Ashby of Disputanta, Dr. Charles C. Ashby of Dinwiddie; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday in Purviance Funeral Home, Wakefield, by the Rev. Anthony George. Burial will be in Wakefield Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today and at the Waverly Baptist Church social hall following the service on Friday. The family suggests that memorial donations be made to the Waverly Baptist Church or the Waverly Volunteer Rescue Squad.
