City officials have fired acting City Manager Dale R. Cooke and replaced her with a retired city administrator.
The City Council named Mollie E. Bass to the interim post until a replacement for former City Manager John J. ``Jack' Jackson is hired. Bass, 60, worked for the city 37 years before retiring as assistant city manager in March 1994. She has been a part-time consultant since then.
The changes were announced at Monday night's council meeting after a late executive session. Mayor Franklin Jester would not comment on the reason, saying it was a personnel matter.
Cooke, 45, was hired in April 1994 as assistant to the city manager. A former teacher, she had worked as a management analyst in James City County before coming to Franklin. Jackson, city manager since 1987, retired for health reasons in August. He had been working part time since December, when he learned he had brain cancer.
On Nov. 4, the council will interview five finalists for the position and hopes to have a new manager in office by the first of the year, Jester said. by CNB
