Newport News Shipbuilding got a $28.8 million year-long extension to a submarine design contract it already had won. The contract calls for yard planning and design support on both attack submarines and ballistic missile submarines. The giant Peninsula shipyard's continued involvement in submarine design helps assure its future as a sub builder. The shipyard fought a successful battle in Congress to get a piece of the New Attack Submarine, a building program scheduled to begin in 1998. The Navy had been trying to give all its submarine building to Electric Boat in Connecticut. (Staff) by CNB
