A container filled with hydrochloric acid fell from a truck and spilled on an Interstate 64 ramp Wednesday.
The accident forced police to close the Armistead Avenue-LaSalle Avenue entry ramp from shortly after 10 a.m. to 1:35 p.m.
Tammy Van Dame, spokeswoman for the Virginia State Police, said charges are pending against the truck driver.
About 5 gallons of the acid spilled onto the ramp. Nine more acid containers also fell from the truck but did not leak.
The spill was cleaned up by hazardous materials experts from the Hampton Fire Department. A regional hazardous materials team also was called to the scene.
