The Manteo Lady Redskins advanced to the North Carolina Class 2A volleyball final four Wednesday night with a 15-5, 15-8, 15-6 win over James Kenan High School of Warsaw.
Manteo, now 25-0 for the year, will play the winner of Wednesday night's South Guilford-Southwest Guilford match Saturday in Greensboro. The winner of Saturday's contest will capture the east regional championship and advance to the state finals in Chapel Hill.
The victory Wednesday night gave Manteo its first trip to the semifinals in the history of the school.
It took Manteo 52 minutes to defeat Kenan (13-5). More than 300 fans, Manteo's largest crowd of the year, yelled, stomped and screamed, and the Redskins responded.
``We're not used to that kind of crowd noise,'' Kenan Coach Jennifer Faison said. ``It sounded like there were 1,000-plus people in the stands. Our players couldn't hear each other. We couldn't communicate, and as a result, our passing game was the worst it's been all year.''
The crowd played a role in the victory, Manteo Coach Stu Serine said. But offense played a bigger role. The Lady Redskins won game one on the strength of a 13-2 run, game two with a 13-0 run, and game three with a string of eight unanswered points.
``Our offense showcased what we're capable of doing,'' Serine said. ``We're a good defensive team, but we're a great offensive team. The girls were very businesslike, very methodical.''
Serine praised the work of Samantha Buchanan, Amy Lane and Heather Daniels, but was quick to credit the entire squad.
``This was a total team effort,'' he said. ``There was no real panic. These girls are playing with a lot of confidence.''
The time and exact location of Manteo's next match is to be announced today. by CNB
