In the Oct. 12 Virginian-Pilot, it took nine inches of text to tell us that the Old Dominion men's soccer team lost to Wake Forest. (It took in that same paper two inches to tell us that the women's soccer team beat Virginia Tech.) In the Oct. 15 Virginian-Pilot, it took about 16 inches to tell us that the men's team had lost to American. (On Oct. 16, it took less than one-and-a-quarter inches to tell us that the Old Dominion women's soccer team had beaten UNC-W.) Why the difference in coverage?
I am a fan of both teams; I have had soccer season tickets for more than 10 years, the last two including the new women's team.
For those who do not follow soccer, both teams are Division 1; both teams are composed of students who work hard to balance studies with sports; both teams practice daily; both teams play 90 minutes of regulation play in each game; both teams proudly represent Old Dominion; and, both teams generate pride in the fans supporting them. The only difference between the teams is that one is composed solely of women and one solely of men! What are your readers supposed to conclude?
