The town of Southern Shores broke ground Thursday for its national construction model and training center known as Blue Sky.
Assistant Commissioner of the North Carolina Department of Insurance Dascheil Propes spoke on behalf of Commissioner James Long who was unable to attend because of illness.
Propes announced that the department was committing the services of William Murchison, ``our foremost wind expert,'' to the project.
``Insurance companies are reluctant to expand coverage in all the coastal states,'' said Propes, but North Carolina is working hard to show insurers ``that we're managing the risk to coastal properties better.''
``It's projects like Blue Sky that will give us the technology we need to make insurance coverage for coastal housing more accessible and affordable,'' said Propes.
Billy Ray Cameron, director of the Division of Emergency Management, praised the program's partnership between government and private enterprise and its timeliness in addressing the problems of storm damage before, rather than after the fact.
Southern Shores Mayor Kern Pitts, Rep. Bill Culpepper, Norma Ware, aide to Sen. Marc Basnight, and Kitty Hawk Land Co. President Mickey Hayes, also spoke. by CNB
