BUS DRIVER ASSAULTED

A 32-year-old woman was charged with assaulting a school bus driver when the bus stopped to let children off near her house Wednesday afternoon.

Cynthia L. Jordan of the 400 block of Cullodan St., was arrested Wednesday night and charged with assault and battery.

Police said Jordan and a 15-year-old boy, who lives in the 400 block of Railroad Ave., got on the bus about 3:45 p.m. and started hitting the driver in the face. The incident happened at the intersection of Cullodan and Forrest streets.

Jordan was reportedly upset that the bus did not pick up her two children Tuesday morning, police spokesman Mike Simpkins said. School officials reported that her children and another student who is normally picked up with them were not at the bus stop when the bus arrived.

The driver, Louise Werkheiser, was treated in the emergency room at Louise Obici Memorial Hospital and later released, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Werkheiser had been advised to take out a petition against the juvenile, but Simpkins did not know whether it had been done.

Bethanne Bradshaw, school spokeswoman, said the teenager has been suspended from classes at John F. Kennedy Middle School and faces an expulsion hearing for assaulting a school employee.
