PORT GROWTH SUSTAINED IN HAMPTON ROADS

Cargo tonnage shipped across the state-owned docks in Hampton Roads maintained its strong growth in September, Virginia International Terminals Inc. announced Thursday. VIT operates the Virginia Port Authority's three terminals in Norfolk, Portsmouth and Newport News. Those terminals handled 587,000 tons of general cargo in September, up from 530,000 tons in September 1994. The port has handled 1 million more tons of general cargo so far this year, 6.8 million tons compared to 5.8 million through September last year, said Joseph A. Dorto, VIT chief executive and general manager. Dorto was happy with September's 10.8 percent gain since last September was when shipments really took off last year. (Staff) by CNB
