N. ACADEMY'S COMEBACK FAILS ON GAME'S FINAL PLAY

Norfolk Academy quarterback Tad Galloway was sacked on the last play of the game on third-and-goal from the 2 as the Bulldogs suffered a 12-9 loss to Richmond Collegiate Friday.

Academy (5-2) had driven from its own 48-yard line in the final 2:40 as it sought to complete a rally from a 12-0 deficit.

After spotting Collegiate (4-3) second- and third-quarter touchdowns, the Bulldogs got on the board in the fourth quarter when Galloway hit Shawn Tobias with a 27-yard touchdown pass.

The visitors took an intentional safety when punter Chuck McFall ran out of the end zone with about three minutes remaining to make it 12-9. Russell Carter then returned the ensuing free kick near midfield to set the stage for the dramatic finish.

Norfolk Academy was its own worst enemy as penalties and fumbles prevented it from scoring on five of its six trips inside Collegiate territory.

Carter was a bright spot for the Bulldogs, rushing 22 times for 139 yards.
