1,000 AND BEYOND FOR DYER IN VICTORY

For some players, breaking the 1,000 yard plateau would be a game to remember. For Deep Creek's Deon Dyer, it was just another day at the office.

Dyer burned Norcom for two touchdowns and went over 1,000 yards rushing on his second carry of the game to lead the top-ranked Hornets to a 38-6 win over the Greyhounds Friday.

On Deep Creek's second possession, Dyer got his team moving with a 34-yard burst that lifted his season total at 996 yards. Then, on first down from the Greyhounds' 16, Dyer reached the 1,000-yard level for the first time in his high school career by bulling through the defense for five yards.

Although the crowd went wild with the announcement, Dyer showed no emotion. After the game, with his offensive line standing beside him, Dyer put it all in perspective with characteristic modesty.

``Excited? Not really. I'm happy, but I wouldn't have those yards if it wasn't for these guys around me,'' said Dyer, who finished with 146 yards on 16 carries to move to 1,108 on the season.

Dyer put the Hornets (8-0, 5-0) on the board with a 3-yard touchdown, then gave Deep Creek a 14-0 lead on a 30-yard score with 6:05 left in the first half.

Teray Frost's 6-yard touchdown after a blocked punt less than two minutes later staked the Hornets to a 21-0 lead at the intermission.

Deep Creek pounded Norcom (2-6, 2-5) defensively in the first half, holding the Greyhounds to 37 yards.

``Coach (Joe) Langston's got a young team and he knows they're not ready yet,'' said Hornets coach Jerry Carter. ``We've got some experience and that showed up front.''

Deep Creek increased its edge in the fourth quarter with touchdowns by Frost and Demont Dunlap. Joe Verdi added a 40-yard field goal.

Norcom's lone touchdown came in the third, after Deep Creek quarterback Arnie Powell fumbled the ball on his own 36. Shawn Branch made the score on a 3-yard run. by CNB
