PRINCIPALS OF THE HIGH SCHOOLS in Portsmouth and Norfolk have held their first meeting to reorganize the athletic teams into the Eastern District next year.
They met on Tuesday.
The Eastern will consist of Maury, Granby, Norview, Booker T. Washington, Lake Taylor, Wilson, Churchland and Norcom.
Athletic directors from the eight schools will be meeting in the near future.
Dr. Dewayne Jeter, Norcom's principal, has been selected as chairman of the new alignment. Michael Caprio, Granby's principal, will be vice chairman.
The athletic merger of schools from the two cities will take effect in the fall of 1996. New football schedules will be among the first tasks to be determined by the athletic directors.
Some of the state's oldest football rivalries will be renewed and some new ones will be started.
Wilson and Maury first met in 1919 and have not played each other since 1971.
Churchland has never played Maury in football.
The old rivalry between Norcom and Booker T. Washington has continued although the Greyhounds were playing in the Southeastern and the Bookers were competing in the Eastern. They recently had their 63rd meeting.
Under the new alignments, Nansemond River and Lakeland will become members of the Southeastern District, along with a new Chesapeake school, Hickory.
A spokesman said it is hoped to have the new Eastern District leaguegames in football at the end of the schedule and the non-district games played first.
Churchland principal Raymond Hale said he was certain the Churchland-Western Branch series will be continued. ILLUSTRATION: Photo
