PINBOY'S OF MILITARY HITS 300 IN ALL LANES, THANKS TO MAUSOLF

If anybody needs an example to show the importance of lane conditions to scoring, look no further than Military Highway.

Pinboy's of Military is enjoying the top scoring in the area.

When the center was operated by Fair Lanes, it was the lowest scoring in South Hampton Roads.

Check this out:

Through the years Fair Lanes Military never had a 300-game bowled until Jim Wenzel accomplished the feat in 1991. Only three ever were bowled there before Dwight Mitchum purchased the lanes a few years ago.

On June 5, 1994, after Plaza Bowl closed, lanes specialist Danny Mausolf moved over to Pinboy's of Military.

Since his arrival there have been 12 300-games, two 299 scores and one 298.

The past week Robert Chambers and 16-year-old Alan Lukens both rolled 300s in the Military Doubles League. It's the second time this season two bowlers in that league have shot perfect games on the same night.

Is ``Mausolf Magic'' involved?

Nope, says the lanes technician.

``It's just clean, consistent lanes and good bowler attitudes,'' said Mausolf.

A 200-plus average bowler, Mausolf was a regular himself in the old days at Military.

``There was a lot of inconsistency in the lanes before,'' he explained. ``You were surprised from week to week on how the lanes would be. It's tough to shoot honor scores under those conditions.''

In the seven weeks of this season there have been seven 300s at Pinboy's of Military.

``Hey,'' said Mausolf. ``I can't give away my secrets.

``It's just clean, consistent lanes and good bowler attitudes,'' he repeated.

Bowler of the Week honors go to Jerry Huddleson, who slammed the season's first 800-series and went on to break the lanes record at Pinboy's of Lynnhaven.

Huddleson had games of 255, 257 and 298 for an 810 series in the Wednesday Nite Mixed Tenpin League. It was seven pins over the previous center record held by Rick Phillips.

The 298 was Huddleson's second bid for a 300 game this year. On opening night he posted a 299.

The latest outburst raised his average to 206.
