VASCO'S TWO GOALS LEAD ODU PAST TRIBE

Carlos Vasco netted two goals to pace Old Dominion to a 2-1 victory over Colonial Athletic Association rival William and Mary on Saturday night.

It was the first time in coach Ralph Perez's six-year career at ODU that the Monarchs defeated the Tribe. Old Dominion blanked William and Mary 3-0 under coach Mike Berticelli in 1989.

``First of all, the fans were treated to a great Division I game,'' Perez said. ``It's the first time we've beaten them since I've been here. We knew we would have to be solid on both sides of the ball.''

The Monarchs were. Defensively they swarmed the Tribe, forcing rushed shots that sailed wide.

``The team was organized, we've been working on that aspect of it,'' Perez said. ``It's just as important. We knew that was one of our goals.

``We knew we could play with them,'' Perez said. ``The guys came in with the attitude that they could beat these guys. We wanted some confidence going into the CAA (tournament.)''

Old Dominion was extremely effective offensively. Vasco scored on the Monarchs' second shot of the game. On his second goal, he stormed into the box and outfoxed a defender.

``I got a great ball by Tom Manning,'' Vasoc said of his second goal. ``The defender came in and I shifted left and fell back. I was going to shoot, but he cut my angle. I went to the left and he did go with me, so I swung back and shot.''

Old Dominion attempted only six shots.

William and Mary's lone goal came with less than six minutes remaining. Billy Owens was driving to the net when he was tackled in the box. He slipped in the ensuing penalty kick.

``We played very good defense,'' Perez said. ````Anything they were going to get, we wanted to make them earn it.''

William and Mary (13-5-0, 5-2 CAA) closes regular-season play Saturday against Richmond. If it wins, the Tribe finishes the season atop the CAA and carries the No. 1 seeding into the tournament.
