James Nelson Dennis, 81, of the 700 block of Prince Charles Circle, died Oct. 29, 1995, in his home.
A native of Norfolk, he retired as a radar technician from the Federal Aviation Agency in 1978. An active member of Lynnhaven United Methodist Church, he was named Norfolk District ``Methodist Man of the Year'' in 1970. He pursued a variety of interests, from piloting aircraft to invention and construction, including a railroad train that carried visitors around his property in Virginia Beach. He was a retired Commander of the Norfolk Coast Guard Reserve Flotilla (NU)52.
Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Frances White Dennis; two daughters, Susan D. Whitaker of Albuquerque, N.M. and Katherine D. Baise of Virginia Beach; four grandchildren, Robin Whitaker of Malawi, East Africa, Roy Whitaker of Albuquerque, Jennifer Baise of Virginia Beach and Amanda Baise of Knoxville, Tenn.; and one sister, Joan Barbour of Wickcliff, Ky.
A memorial service will be held at Lynnhaven United Methodist Church at 1033 Little Neck Road, Virginia Beach, Tuesday, Oct. 31, at 4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the church's building fund. The family will receive friends this evening from 7 to 8 p.m. at their home.
