A 41-year-old woman was shot Sunday afternoon after an apparent argument with her husband who, police said, then turned the gun on himself.
The woman died; the man was hospitalized and is reported to be in serious condition Sunday night.
Police are not releasing the names of the couple until relatives are notified.
The incident happened about 4:30 p.m. in the 700 block of Lanier Crescent in the River Park section of the city.
Police were first called to the area for a report of a woman lying in the street. When rescue personnel arrived they pronounced the woman dead at the scene.
Police learned that the gunman had gone into a nearby house. However, repeated efforts to contact him and to get him to come out failed.
The police tactical response team surrounded the house and, about 5:30 p.m., went in. The man was arrested without incident and was taken to a hospital for the treatment of a gunshot wound.
