WHITE, BLUE MARLIN CONFOUND THE CALENDAR WITH OFFSHORE SHOWINGS

White marlin staged an unprecedented late-October showing off the coast of Virginia and Northeastern North Carolina a few days ago, with yellowfin tuna, wahoo and dolphin included in the action.

The top catch was reported Thursday by the charter boat Grass Man, which released four of the feisty billfish. Don White skippers the boat out of the Virginia Beach Fishing Center.

Several other boats from Virginia and North Carolina shared in the action, which also featured two blue marlin releases. One was from the charter boat Sea Jay IV, sailing from Pirate's Cove Marina at Nags Head, the other from the private boat Pursuer, out of Rudee Inlet. The hottest action was just southeast of the Cigar seamount.

Elsewhere, Mike Pope of Gastonia, N.C., released a 45 1/2-inch red drum in the surf at Avon, N.C., to win the 12th edition of the World Championship Red Drum Tournament. Second went to Ralph Moore of Woodleaf, N.C., at 44 3/4 inches, third to Howard Cater of Buxton, N.C., at 44 1/2 inches. The woman's award went to Theresa Deaton of Maiden, N.C., at 42 1/2 inches. The contest was staged by Frank-N-Fran's tackle shop at Avon.

The boat Nancy K. won the Hatteras Island King Mackerel Tournament with a fish weighing 48 pounds, caught by Charles Taylor of Richmond. The Sea Haven II took second with a 45-pounder caught by Oliver Mead of Robersonville, N.C., while the Hatteras Fever was third at 38-0. The angler's name was unavailable.
