TOO MANY ELECTED

``Competence should be court-clerk test'' (letter, Oct. 23) makes an excellent point. We don't elect our city manager; we don't elect our police chief or school superintendent. The reason we don't is that the jobs require a high degree of skill and experience. Why can't we eliminate these political jobs and have them send in an application like everyone else?

Several cities in the area have had their share of sheriff problems in the past. Why do we even need a sheriff? In most cities this office could report directly to the chief of police and the department could be run with a supervisor at half the price.

Another issue is the cost of the elections by the cities. The taxpayers have to pay to select someone that may not be the best person for the job. We must cut down on the expense of running our cities, and this could be a start.
