Joseph C. Mathis Jr., 50, of the 500 block of Weaver Circle, died Oct. 28, 1995, in Maryview Medical Center.
He was a native of Jacksonville, Fla., and was a graduate of Crestwood High School Class of 1964. He was also a veteran of U.S. Navy.
He is survived by his mother, Nettie H. Mathis of Portsmouth; sister, Barbara Jeffrey of Portsmouth; two brother-in-laws, Charles Blount and Clifton Dixon, both of Portsmouth; eight aunts, three uncles, three nieces, Fern Jeffrey, Tonda Blount, both of Portsmouth; Felicia Mathis of New York; one great-niece, Ashley Jeffrey of N.Y.; one nephew, Robert Jeffrey of Portsmouth; and one great-nephew, Jeffrey of Portsmouth.
A graveside service will be conducted at noon Thursday by the Rev. Sidney Foster Jr. in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at 4730 Hatton Point Road, Portsmouth today from 7 to 9 p.m. and they will assemble there at 11:15 a.m. Thursday for the procession to the cemetery. Serenity Funeral Home is in charge.
