The North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service will test Albemarle residents' drinking water for lead Nov. 7 at Hertford Center.
One-quart samples taken first thing in the morning may be taken to extension centers in Camden, Pasquotank, Perquimans or Chowan counties before Nov. 7.
There is a $5 charge to analyze each sample, which will be tested by extension agents and North Carolina State University specialists.
Lead, a toxic, heavy metal, can stunt growth and brain development, and can contribute to problems such as arthritis and painful nerve symptoms. Pasquotank County has one of the state's highest percentages of school-aged children with unsafe lead levels in their bodies.
