RJR Nabisco Holdings Corp. said publicly for the first time it wants to spin off the rest of its Nabisco food company, seeking to mollify shareholders threatening a battle for control of RJR's board. The partial retreat came after corporate raiders Bennett LeBow and Carl Icahn said they had amassed 4.8 percent of New York-based RJR and would ask other shareholders to vote to urge the company's board to spin off the 80.5 percent of Nabisco Holdings Corp. that RJR still owns. RJR indicated it won't sell Nabisco before 1997. The nation's No. 2 cigarette company maker said it wanted an eventual spinoff of the maker of Oreo and Ritz snacks. (Bloomberg Business News) by CNB
