UNOPPOSED CANDIDATES

Several positions in Isle of Wight County are up for election next Tuesday but offer no opposition to the incumbents. Here are brief profiles of them.

COMMONWEALTH'S ATTORNEY

W. Parker Councill seeks his fourth term as commonwealth's attorney of Isle of Wight County.

Councill, a Democrat, was first G1AWTHUMS Councill elected to the post in 1983, just three years after opening his law firm in historic downtown Smith-field. A 1976 law graduate of the University of Virginia, Councill spent four years working for a Smithfield law firm before striking out on his own.

Councill is a Franklin native and lives in Smithfield with his wife, Sandra, and their two children.

REVENUE COMMISSIONER

Gerald H. Gwaltney is running for his fifth term as Isle of Wight County's commissioner of the revenue.

Gwaltney, 39, has held that post since he was first elected in 1979.

He is a Democrat. He was president of the Commissioners of the Revenue Association of Virginia in 1990.

Gwaltney attended schools in Isle of Wight County and graduated from Randolph-Macon College with a degree in political science. He is a member of Bethany United Methodist Church where he is assistant organist. He is a member of the Smithfield Ruritan Club and of the Smithfield Kiwanis Club.

Gwaltney lives in Smithfield with his wife, Sheila, and their three children.

COUNTY TREASURER

Beryl H. Perry Jr. seeks his fourth term as Isle of Wight County Treasurer.

Perry, a Democrat, is a 39-year-old certified public accountant. He was elected in 1983 and re-elected in 1987 and 1991.

Perry is active in both professional and civic organizations, including the Virginia Constitutional Officers Association, Virginia Treasurers Association and the Smithfield Kiwanis Club. He also belongs to the Smithfield Masonic Lodge and to Ruritan clubs in both Carrollton and Smithfield.

He and his wife, Mary, live in the Carrollton area with their two sons.

COUNTY BOARD

Malcom T. ``Mac'' Cofer, chairman of the Board of Supervisors, is running for his second term as an independent in the Smithfield District.

Cofer was elected to the board in 1991, becoming vice chairman in 1994 and chairman this year.

The Smithfield businessman has a long history of political service in the county. He has spent 18 years on the Smithfield Planning Commission, six years on the Smithfield Town Council and four years on the Isle of Wight Planning Commission.

Cofer, 52, owns his own insurance and financial services business on Church Street in Smithfield. He and his family are members of Trinity United Methodist Church.

O.A. Spady is running for his second term as an independent in the Newport District.

Spady, 60, has held the County Board seat since 1991. He also served two terms on that board 20 years ago.

The Isle of Wight County native owns a commercial industrial laundry in Smithfield. Spady and wife, Hazel, live in Battery Park and are members of Battery Park Baptist Church. They have two grown children. ILLUSTRATION: Councill
