MARY R. FRENCH

Mary Ruth Donaldson French, 81, of Norfolk, died Sunday in a local retirement center.

Mrs. French was born in Mayville, Mich., and was the widow of Captain Lawrence C. French, U.S. Navy, Retired. She was a homemaker and former teacher and a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church. She was also a member of The Catholic Daughters of America, St. Pius Senior Citizens, The Nocturnal Adoration Society, and was former leader of The Holy Family Retreat Home. She had formerly been a substitute teacher at St. Pius X School, Holy Trinity School and the Douglas McArthur Academy. She was a graduate of Central Michigan University.

Survivors include two daughters, Sondra Cange of Van Nuys, Calif., and Mary Margaret Valley of Gainesville, Ga.; two sons, Lawrence C. French Jr. of Virginia Beach and Michael F. French of Norfolk; one sister, Frances Willetts of Sterling Heights, Michigan; 12 grandchildren, Raymond Valley Jr. of Seattle, Wash., Eric Kittay of Van Nuys, Calif., Michael Valley of Athens, Ga., Jennifer Kittay of Van Nuys, Calif., Suzanne Troha of Loganville, Ga., Christopher French of Norfolk, Patrick Valley of Athens, Ga., Monica French of San Francisco, Calif., Jonathan French of Norfolk, Lawrence C. French III of Virginia Beach, Katherine French and Charles French, both of Virginia Beach; two great-grandchildren, Zachary and Ariel Troha, both of Loganville, Ga.

A Mass of the Resurrection will be conducted Thursday at 11 a.m. by the Rev. Father William J. Dale in St. Pius X Catholic Church. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery. Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel, in charge. A Christian wake service will be conducted at 7 p.m. today at the funeral home with the family remaining to receive friends afterwards.
