TEENAGER SHOT

A 17-year-old was fatally shot Tuesday afternoon in what police are investigating as the city's 33rd homicide of the year.

Tuesday night, police arrested Andrew Thomas Jr., a 39-year-old Newport News man, and charged him with murder and a weapons violation. Thomas' address was listed as the 1100 block of 27th St.

The victim has not been identified.

Police were called to the 500 block of Edwards St. shortly after 3:30 p.m. by a report that a person had been shot.

They found the victim in a courtyard of the Southside Gardens apartment complex. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

``It is known that the victim was apparently shot following some type of confrontation,'' said police spokeswoman Amber Whittaker.

Anyone with information is asked to call Detective R. Simmons at 393-8536 or Crime Line at 488-7777.

Later Tuesday, police also responded to the 200 block of Dale Drive, where another shooting occurred. No report was available Tuesday night on the condition of the victim or the details of the shooting.
