COUNCIL HOPES FREE PARKING WILL LURE LOCALS TO NAUTICUS NORFOLKIANS GET A BREAK ON WEEKENDS, FOR TWO MONTHS.

To lure locals into Nauticus, the City Council is offering free parking on most weekends during the next two months to city residents who visit the maritime attraction on the Elizabeth River.

The free parking will be at the City Hall Avenue garage at the corner of Boush Street or at the Town Point Municipal lot on Boush and Plume streets.

Visitors who show proof of Norfolk residency when buying Nauticus admission tickets can present their validated tickets to the cashier at the parking facilities.

An individual or family staying all day could save up to $8, the maximum parking charge. The lots and garages charge 50 cents for the first hour, 75 cents the second hour and $1 for each additional hour up to $8.

The strategy is part of a council plan to encourage locals to visit Nauticus and adopt a more supportive attitude toward the $52 million attraction. Many residents have not given Nauticus a chance, council members say.

The free parking will start this Saturday. It will last through Dec. 30.

It will not apply Saturday, Nov. 18, or Saturday, Nov. 25, when the city expects large crowds downtown.

The Holidays in the City street parade is scheduled for Nov. 18, and a boat parade on the Elizabeth River is Nov. 25. by CNB
