New York investment banker Thomas A. Saunders III gave the University of Virginia's Darden Graduate School of Business $10 million to boost the university's $750 million fund-raising campaign.
Saunders, a graduate of the Darden school, is a founding partner of Saunders Karp & Co. investment bank in New York. The gift is the largest ever given to the Darden school, according to U.Va. President John Casteen.
Saunders and his wife, Jordan, have donated $13 million to the school since 1991.
The latest contribution will fund improvements in Darden's executive education program and will be used for faculty salaries, research and technology.
The Saunders' gift of $3 million in the fall of 1991 helped build five new buildings at the business school. The central building of these will be named Saunders Hall.
Saunders is chairman of the Darden School Foundation Board of Trustees and the Campaign for Darden. Jordan Saunders is a member of the committee of the $750 million Campaign for the University of Virginia.
Saunders founded Saunders Karp & Co. after a 22-year career at the investment banking firm Morgan Stanley & Co. A Tidewater native, he graduated from Virginia Military Institute, where he is a member of the Board of Visitors. by CNB
