THEY PLUCKED A PECK OF SPECKLED TROUT

Pier action along the northern beaches varied from place to place Tuesday.

Kitty Hawk Pier reported plenty of speckled trout weighing up to 3 pounds, taken halfway out on the pier during most of the morning.

A few small puppy drum, speckled trout and bluefish were landed on Avalon Pier.

Anglers on Nags Head Pier caught small speckled trout and some spot during the morning. Small blues and a few speckled trout were taken over the afternoon.

On Jennette's Pier some speckled trout and tailor bluefish were landed on double bucktail rigs. The largest speckled trout reported, weighing 4-1/4 pounds was landed by John Thorp of Nags Head.

Scattered black drum, a few speckled trout and small flounder were caught by fishermen on Outer Banks Pier.

On Hatteras Island Rodanthe Pier fishermen landed some tailor blues. Additionally a 9-pound, 12-ounce flounder was decked by Leon Shepherd of Warrensville, N.C.

Some small black drum, flounder and medium sea mullet were taken on Avon Pier.

Fishing was slow on Frisco Pier with only a handful of sea mullet, small blues and black drum landed.

In the surf a fairly good run of speckled trout developed during the morning north of Kitty Hawk Pier. Scattered trout were also reported taken at various other sloughs along the northern beach area.

Around Oregon Inlet a few puppy drum, tailor blues and trout were beached. Grass was a problem in the area.

Puppy drum and some small bottom fish were landed along the beach from Rodanthe to Buxton.

At Cape Point some puppy drum were landed Monday night. A few puppy drum, blues and small bottom fish were taken Tuesday.

A few black drum, bluefish, puppy drum, and sea mullet were caught by surfcasters from Frisco to False Point.

King mackerel catches were good near the 70 degree tower off Oregon Inlet. Fairly good tuna fishing was reported in 30 to 40 fathoms of water around the 41640, 41650 Loran lines.

Hatteras charters reported fair mackerel and blackfin tuna catches.

The Release landed six wahoo and one tuna, and released a small blue marlin.

Speckled trout fishing should be good in the surf along the northern beaches Wednesday provided inshore water remains clear.

Water temperature at the Corps of Engineers Pier in Duck was 67.5 degrees on Tuesday. by CNB
