GERALD K. PAYNE

Gerald Kenneth Payne, 50, died Oct. 31, 1995, in his residence.

Retired Cmdr. Payne served the U.S. Navy for 25 years. He was a native of New York City. Cmdr. Payne was a member of the Theta Chi Fraternity and a graduate of Syracuse University as well as the National War College. He was a senior advisor with Costal Group 41, Ha Tien, Republic of Vietnam from 1970 to 1971. He was later assigned to the Naval Amphibious Base, Little Creek, as executive officer, where he served until December 1988. During this period he received his master's degree in Business Administration from Golden Gate University. While in command he deployed as commander Naval Beach Group 2 Detachment in support of Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm. Cmdr. Payne's decorations include the Bronze Star with Combat ``V,'' Purple Heart, Defense Meritorious Service Medal and numerous other commendations.

Survivors include his wife, Beverly Payne; one daughter, Rebecca Payne of Virginia Beach; one son, Christopher Payne of Virginia Beach; his mother, Betty D. Payne of Virginia Beach; two sisters, Janice Kinnealy of Ridgewood, N.J., and Joyce Kalish of Ellenville, N.Y.

A graveside service will be conducted at 1 p.m. today in Arlington National Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Lynnhaven Chapel, Friday and Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to the Sentara Hospice Program, (NU)8 Koger Executive Center, Norfolk, Va. 23502, or Thalia United Methodist Church.
